I sat on the edge of his bed and heard one of his little breathing sounds that he makes when he's awake. I said his name, no answer. I started rubbing his back and singing to him the "good morning to you" song to the music of happy birthday that my dad used to sing to me. Nothing.
More singing. Louder. More rubbing. Nothing. Then he starts snoring. And I mean, textbook, cartoon character snoring. I talked to him, still no response. More singing, faster back rub that it moving his whole body around.
He finally stirs and rolls over, smiling the biggest cat-ate-the-canary grin I've even been able to see in the dark! That little stinker was pretending to sleep to fool me!
